In 1946, David Packard and William Douglas of Hewlett-Packard formed a small electronics company named Hewlett-Packard based out of a garage in Palo Alto, CA. During the first year HP produced only three items: an audio oscillator (later renamed an audion tube), an all-in-one plug-and-play radio/record player and an AM/FM receiver (later known as the HP 2000A). The company also produced a six transistor radio which became one of the most successful small radios of its time. By the mid 50s Hewlett-Packard had become the leading manufacturer of audio test equipment in California. In 1951, Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard incorporated their business as Hewlett-Packard Co.

For a brief time, HP manufactured televisions in addition to its other products, but it quickly withdrew from the market. The company also produced one of the first personal computers, known as the HP 9800 series. In 1996, Bill Gates joined with Compaq to create a new high performance computer company that would offer reliable products at reasonable prices. The Compaq merger proved to be short-lived though, as it was officially dissolved into two separate companies in October 2001.

HP went public in 1957 with $8 million. The IPO was the largest in the history of Silicon Valley at that time. In 1999, HP announced the acquisition of Apollo Computer which would become its enterprise storage and server division. HP cashed out their shares in October 2002, gaining $1 billion from the deal. The company introduced a new line of printers, particularly aimed towards business owners and individuals, in late 2004.
